History

Part of Witney’s blanket-making story.

Crawley Mill has a long industrial history connected with the Witney blanket trade. Today, the estate continues as a home for a range of local businesses.

c. 1220

A corn mill is believed to have stood on the Crawley Mill site from around this period, making it one of the long-established mill locations on the River Windrush.

c. 1520

A fulling mill was added when the lease passed to Richard Box, from a family of Witney fullers. The site later became closely linked with blanket production.

18th century

The oldest surviving part of the Crawley Mill buildings appears to date from this period. The original stone mill straddles the mill race and remains one of the most distinctive parts of the site.

19th century

Steam power was introduced, with the surviving chimney still forming part of the character of the mill complex. The wider estate developed with additional mill buildings and sheds.

Today

The site now provides offices, workshops, storage spaces and outside yards for a range of commercial occupiers, while preserving an important part of Witney’s industrial past.
